Obituary for Zella G. Ruthberg (Goldner)

Zella Goldner Ruthberg Silverstein, 95, Passed away on 25 April 2021, 13 Iyar 5781 in San Diego, California.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Edward Silverstein, sons, Miles and Jeffrey, grandchildren Stephanie, Jeremy, and Annaliese and her loving extended family including Catherine, Wadad, Marcia , Michael, Paul, Jori and many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews

She is predeceased by her first husband, Stanley Ruthberg, Daughter Lisa, sister Roslyn and brother Jack.

Zella was born in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Ester Goldner on 21 October 1925. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Brooklyn College and went on to receive a Masters in Science in Physics from the University of Michigan. As an early and courageous pioneer in physics for women, she went on to have a distinguished career in computer science and security. She began at National Institutes of Health and continued at the National Bureau of Standards (now known as the National Institute of Standards and Technology) for over twenty years. As an expert in computer science when the field was just beginning, she was one of the first women to edit a book on the topic.

Zella is remembered for her devotion to family and her seeking mind always reaching out to continue learning. She kept the traditions and contacts within the family alive with love and dedication. She enjoyed life and loved investigating and sharing new frontiers in health and of the mind and spirit. She loved music and nature. Her enthusiasm for life and kindness to everyone, which was such a part of her soul, will be missed by all who knew her.

The Burial Service for Zella will take place at the El Camino Memorial Park 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego, CA 92121 at 11AM PDT on Tuesday 27 April 2021. The service will be led by Rabbi Shulman from Zella’s home synagogue Beth El La Jolla. A Zoom meeting link for the service will be available for those who cannot travel at this time and wish to attend virtually.
