Obituary for Judith C Himelstein

Judith (Judy) Himelstein

1933-2022

Beloved wife, mother, and grandmother. Writer, lover of opera, theater, books, sports, travel and daily water aerobics. Judy, a resident of the Coronado Shores for 46 years, died on January 2, 2022.

Judy was born in Calumet City, IL to Sol Benjamin and Thelma (Manalan). She graduated at the top of her class from Indiana University at Bloomington with degrees in journalism and Spanish. She loved being an editor of the college newspaper and was an enthusiastic member of Sigma Delta Tau.

Shortly after college, Judy married Mandel (Del) Himelstein and they moved to Phoenix where they raised their children. Judy was a passionate community organizer, serving on the school board, as a PTA President, and fighting for numerous political causes. She also co-founded the museum at Temple Beth Israel.

After moving to Coronado, Judy organized groups dedicated to books, opera and history. She frequented the Old Globe Theater, San Diego Opera, and local museums. She was a committed volunteer, teaching unwed teenage mothers essential life skills. Judy was also a founding member of Water Babies, a water aerobics group that meets every morning at the Shores pool.

Memories of Judy’s warm heart and bright red-lipsticked smile will be cherished by all who knew her. A private remembrance of her beautiful life will be held by the family. She is survived by her children, Scott, Lisa and Linda, and five grandchildren. Contributions to the San Diego Opera in her honor would be fitting if you so choose.
