Harold Bernard Reisman
Dr. Harold Bernard Reisman, born October 29, 1935 and a native of Brooklyn, New York, graduated from Tilden High School as valedictorian of his class. He received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Chemical Engineering from Columbia University in New York City where he was editor of the Engineering School yearbook, and Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He was awarded a PhD in Chemical Engineering for his work at Columbia University on continuous fermentation and was a Boise Fellow and McMullen Fellow during that time. As a post-doctoral researcher on a Fulbright Fellowship, he worked in a group headed by Nobel Laurette, Dr. Ernest Chain, at the Instituto Superiore Di Sanita in Rome, Italy. While in Italy, he was invited to a semi-private audience with Pope John XXIII at the Vatican.
Dr. Reisman’s work experience included research and development for Merck Sharp and Dohme in Danville, Pennsylvania, Elkton, Virginia and Rahway, New Jersey. During that time, he made multiple trips to Japan and participated in technical and commercial exchanges with 3 major biotechnology companies there. As an executive for Stauffer Chemical Company, Dr. Reisman was a Bioengineering Research Director and Plant Manager in San Jose, California and Business Group Director and Director of Manufacturing in Westport, Connecticut at the company’s corporate headquarters. He authored research papers and chapters in the book, “Microbial Technology” and the Encyclopedia of Chemical Process Design. A patent on continuous fermentation ensued. He also authored the book, “Economic Analysis of Fermentation Processing,” a text for academia, business and industry. In Cambridge and Canton, Massachusetts, as the Vice President of Organogenesis, a biotechnology company and manufacturer of replacement skin and organs, Dr. Reisman received recognition ad awards for his work in the design of their manufacturing facility in the Boston area. He was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering for his outstanding contributions to that field. He was a featured guest on televisions’ Nightly Business Report discussing the research, development and products of Organogenesis. As President of Biotechnology Results, a consulting firm, he continued with international consulting and authored many scientific reviews and papers.
Dr. Reisman was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Institute of Food Technologists, the Technion Society, Mensa, Camera, the Foundation for Constitutional Democracy, B’nai Brith, Jihad Watch, Stand With Us and was an associate member of Hadassah. He was Chairman of the Jewish Federation in Westport, Connecticut and an officer of the Zionist Organization of America in San Diego, California. He was also a member of Christians United for Israel. His discussions on the Jewish prophets at the North County Jewish Community Center, a Chabad at La Costa affiliated group, have been praised. He was an ardent Zionist, worked to free Soviet Jewry and was a supporter of Jewish causes around the world.
Dr. Reisman’s great interest in military history and his Koranic studies are fueled by his desire to better understand the causes of world conflict, religious wars, terrorism and antisemitism. He has written often on these subjects.
He and his wife, Miriam Fish Reisman, married in 1960, are world travelers and make biannual trips to Israel for visits to their daughter, Jocelyn, married to Dr. Dan Odenheimer, and their family. The Odenheimers are residents of Efrat, Israel and the parents of eight children. The Reisman’s son, Dr. Joseph Reisman, and his wife, Sara, live in San Diego and are the parents of three children. The Reisman’s have six granddaughters, 5 grandsons and 2 great grandsons. Dr. Reisman has one sister, Mrs. Beatrice Stanger, who lives in New York City, four sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
